eye think lab

psychology somewhere between perception and cognition
Here you can or look at some of the stimuli and experimental manipulations from the first five experiments in the project, published in

Richardson, D. C. & Spivey, M. J. (2000). Representation, space and Hollywood Squares: Looking at things that aren't there anymore. Cognition, 76, 269-295.

Apparatus

This picture shows the basic set up of the Hollywood Squares Experiments. The subject is wearing a light, head mounted ISCAN eye tracker. He is watching a series of facts appear on the 2 x 2 grid on the computer monitor. The TV is displaying the output from the eye tracker's scene camera, with the subject's eye position super imposed as crosshairs. You can just about make out the talking head on the computer monitor, and on the TV screen you can see that the subject is looking at it.

Please note that this photo is a mock up of an experiment for demonstration purposes. When we actually ran subjects, a black screen was placed around the computer monitor, the TV was out of the subjects view, and other distractions were removed.

Example Fact

This is an example of the 'talking head' clips that were used in Experiments 1, 3 and 4

Experiment 3

This is an example of a fact presentation from Exp. 3 The subject is required to fixate the spinning red cross whenever it appears.

Experiment 4

These pictures show the color switch in the 'Alien' manipulation of Exp. 4 The talking head turned green for one second during its run.

Experiment 5

Here are examples of the fact presentation in the tracking and watching conditions. Note that the relative motion within the window is the same in both conditions.
